Geography
Geographically, Tanah Bumbu Regency is located between 2°52’–3°47’ South Latitude and 115°15’–116°04’ East Longitude, with a total area of 4,890.30 km² (489,030 Ha), representing 13.03 percent of the total area of South Kalimantan Province.
Tanah Bumbu Regency is one of the 13 regencies in South Kalimantan Province, situated at the southeastern tip of Kalimantan Island. Its boundaries are as follows:
- North: Kotabaru Regency;
- South: Java Sea;
- West: Banjar Regency and Tanah Laut Regency;
- East: Kotabaru Regency.
The geographical location of Tanah Bumbu Regency offers strategic potential to support regional interactions at both national and international scales, particularly with the availability of transportation infrastructure. Its strategic potentials include:
- Being part of the National Strategic Area (KSN) and the Special Economic Zone (KEK).
- Designation as the Batulicin Industrial Zone (KIB).
- Serving as a Trans-Kalimantan route that connects Banjarmasin with Samarinda and the New Capital City (IKN).
Situated at the central point of Indonesia, Tanah Bumbu has long-term potential as a hub between the eastern and western regions, while also serving as a supplier of regional needs for South Kalimantan and the IKN area. The road distance from Batulicin to Banjarmasin is approximately 263 km, and from Batulicin to the new capital (IKN) is about 391 km.
Administratively, Tanah Bumbu Regency, with its capital in Batulicin, was established as a division of Kotabaru Regency. It currently consists of 12 districts: Kusan Hilir, Kusan Tengah, Sungai Loban, Satui, Kusan Hulu, Teluk Kepayang, Batulicin, Karang Bintang, Simpang Empat, Mantewe, Kuranji, and Angsana. Kusan Tengah and Teluk Kepayang are the newest districts, established in 2021.
Teluk Kepayang is the largest district, covering 25.63 percent of the regency’s total area, while Kusan Hilir is the smallest with 74.56 km² or only 1.52 percent. In order of size after Teluk Kepayang, the largest districts are Mantewe, Satui, Sungai Loban, Simpang Empat, Kusan Hulu, Kusan Tengah, Karang Bintang, Angsana, Batulicin, Kuranji, and finally Kusan Hilir.
